I think studying the Harlem Renaissance in the 21st century is necessary to understanding American history. It has to do with African American history and culture as well as their struggle and life style. Their strength and determination shines through the literature from the 1920’s as blacks searched for their identity and ways to improve their lives. Other influences from the Harlem Renaissance include music and dance. Clearly jazz music made impression in history as it led to other forms of musical expression such as hip hop and rap. I also find it interesting that there are still lindy hop dance competitions being held today! I never would have imagined an art form like that was still being practiced. That just goes to show the long lasting impact that African American artists had on today’s world.

African American art, literature, etc has impacted our lives today. Jazz has evolved into different music types today. Dances are still used today as well. This shows the impact that African Americans had on society and even though they were going through hardships and weren't accepted in society, they still strived to stand out. African Americans didn't let the white society control them and not allow them to succeed.

I, too, really didn't know the full extent of the strength demonstrated by African Americans until completing the required readings for this class. Yes, I had learned about the history of slavery and knew a general background about the struggles of the blacks, but I had never heard the struggle described in the way that some of our writers discussed it...pouring their hearts out about the prejudices they faced and the racial uplift they hoped to impose on younger generations.

I agree with you, not only is studying the Harlem Renaissance crucial to knowing history to be wiser today, but also look at all the stuff we learned about. Not only did we learn about great writers. The music, dance, and media; talk about having an impact on a society. So much of the great music we love and listen today would not even compare if there were not black soul and influence present.
